Weather

October is generally a very pleasant month in Tucson with possibly a mild touch of autumn in the air. Expect temperatures around 55°F/13°C in the evening and around 86°F/30°C during the day. The climate page of the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau provides statistical year-round climate information.

Currency

The local currency in Tucson, AZ, USA is the US Dollar. For information regarding exchange rates, please see The Universal Currency Converter or The Currency Site. Please be aware there is no currency exchange office at Tucson International Airport. Here is a google map of banks located in close proximity to the conference venue. Please note there is an ATM located in the lobby of La Paloma.

Restaurants

Tucson is renowned for its Southwestern and Mexican cuisine catering to a wide variety of styles and price ranges. The LOC has compiled a list of some local restaurants for you.

Things to See and Do

The Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau maintains a web site of many interesting things to see and do for visitors. Visitors should know about the Tucson Attractions Passport which is a pocket savings guide to interesting things to see and do in Southern Arizona. The cost of the guide is US$15 and can be purchased on-line or in person at the Tucson Visitor Center which is located downtown at 100 South Church Street in La Placita Village. The savings guide can also now be purchased on the University of Arizona Campus with cash or check at the following two locations:

  • The University of Arizona Visitor Center, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • The Arizona State Museum Store, Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm/12:30 pm - 5:00 pm, or Sunday, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The LOC has their own list of their local favorite attractions, including personal commentary.

Due to Tucson's mild weather, there are many outdoor activities and attractions to see. In particular, if you are going to be hiking, you should be aware of how to avoid or handle situations regarding Arizona's poisonous or stinging critters. This FAQ provided by the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center should address some basic questions regarding snakes and scorpions.

Visitors need to be warned that Arizona is quite a dry and sunny climate; they should be particularly careful to drink plenty of water while touring and/or travelling around town and the state. Wearing sunglasses and sunscreen are also suggested!

Time

The state of Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone; Daylight Saving Time is not observed in Arizona, except in the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona. The Mountain Time Zone is 7 hours behind UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) during Standard Time, and 6 hours behind during Daylight Saving Time.

Medical Insurance

It is recommended that all ADASS participants check their medical insurance coverage during their stay in Tucson, AZ, USA. The LOC and the POC will not accept any liability for sickness or accidents.
